Bricklaying – Gareth
Level 2 Diploma in Bricklaying – FL2 – CG – Adults
Looking for a fresh start, Gareth chose to retrain as a bricklayer by enrolling in our part-time evening course.
Returning to education later in life, he has developed valuable skills, grown in confidence, and laid strong foundations for a future career in construction.
Why did you choose to study your course?
“I chose to study bricklaying because I’ve always liked working with my hands and wanted to learn a proper trade. I was looking for something practical that could lead to a good career, and bricklaying really stood out. It’s something I can take pride in and build a future with.”
Which key skills have you developed during your course?
“Since starting, I’ve learned loads of skills, like setting out, following a drawing, laying bricks in different bonds, and working to measurements. I’m much more confident now around tools than when I started.”
Gareth Wilson“North Notts College has been great. All workshops are well set up, and everything we need is there.”
How has the college supported you so far?
“North Notts College has been great. All workshops are well set up, and everything we need is there.
The support from Mick and Neil has made a huge difference. They’re properly experienced and always take time to explain things clearly. You can tell they care about helping us succeed.”
What part of the course have you enjoyed the most?
“The hands-on practical work has definitely been the best part. I like seeing a job through from start to finish and knowing I built it.
It’s a good feeling when things start clicking and you can look back and see how much better you’ve gotten.”
Gareth Wilson“Stick at it, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. It might feel tough at the beginning, but you’ll get there. Pay attention, take your time, and trust the tutors; they know what they’re doing and want to see you do well.”
Can you share any challenges overcome along the way?
“At first, I struggled a bit with getting things level and keeping my brickwork neat. But with practice and advice from Mic and Neil, I started to get the hang of it. They were patient and gave me honest feedback, which really helped me improve.”
Do you have any advice for future students?
“Stick at it, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. It might feel tough at the beginning, but you’ll get there. Pay attention, take your time, and trust the tutors; they know what they’re doing and want to see you do well.”
Where do you see yourself in five years?
“In five years I hope to be running my own jobs or starting my own small business. I want to keep learning on the job and build up a solid reputation. This course has given me a great start to get there.”
